I know that this isn't really about therapy but it is
about attitude, values and health.
There's been a series running on channel 4 this week
on chicken welfare. Firstly it has
impressed me that two people, namely Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver, have been
prepared to take on the complacency of the supermarkets and public regarding
the way cheap chickens are raised.
Secondly, tempting as it is to avoid making the
connection between eating meat and raising/killing animals, I think whatever
decision we come to, it should be thoughtfully made. It's about being true to
ourselves. Being honest with ourselves
concerning the choices we make in life gives us strength of character and
integrity. In contrast inner dishonesty,
manipulating others or colluding with practises we know are unsound sets us up
for internal discord which, in my opinion as a therapist, is not in the
interests of our long term emotional health.
Finally, and again it's a matter of opinion, it seems
to me that the closer our food is to the natural ingredients produced in a
healthy and natural way, then the more likely it is to be good for our bodies
and thus our general wellbeing.
