On the BBC website today is an article about lung cancer: Lung cancer 'link to lack of sun'. Evidently the risk of lung cancer increases with distance from the equator. Smoking is, of course, the highest risk factor in the development of lung cancer but lack of sunlight and thus the production of vitamin D, increases the risk. Most of our vitamin D is obtained from exposure to sunlight but it can also be found in foods such as oily fish, eggs and dairy products. But how do we square the need for sunlight with the increasing risks of skin cancer? As in all things it seems, moderation. I tend to stay in during the hottest part of the day in summer, and disliking the feel of sun lotion, tend to be careful about exposure at other times. Today, when the sun was shining, rather weakly, but at least brightening up the day, I went out with the dog. Apart from addressing her needs I can tick my daily exercise box, time out for reflection box and the exposure to sunlight box. So I won’t mention the theft of milk chocolate from the fridge later on in the afternoon…..or does it count as dairy produce?
